I'm not very impressed with Insel, because he, as the head of the NIMH, at least the last time I heard him speak, wants to keep mental illness medicalized. I know that he is on record saying that the medications aren't working, but I see that as his chance to throw more money at looking for that elusive magic bullet.Rossa Forbeshttp://holisticschizophrenia.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2894514913516471357.post-77273956089816100562011-10-10T07:48:40.747-07:002011-10-10T07:48:40.747-07:00You can always search my blog using keywords Menta...You can always search my blog using keywords Mental Illness, to get a sense of where I stand vis-a-vis my own "diagnosis" and views on mental health care.

I did not start my blog to discuss my mental health issues, but it came up naturally last year as I learned of Whitaker's work and read the issue of Nature (British Journal) sometime last fall. I think I had my relapse in part because I saw how much Psychiatry wanted to invalidate Whitaker, even as the head of NIMH... was admitting that medications might not be the best treatment for the "schizophrenic" brain. Did you see the letter he wrote on his blog?Smittyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12681768755769989964noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2894514913516471357.post-71864884712162020922011-10-10T07:41:08.595-07:002011-10-10T07:41:08.595-07:00I am glad we are on a similar journey. I am pretty close to being anti-med myself, but for the fact that I am in 12-step fellowship and want no one to feel judged for their choice to use medications they have found helpful.

You will find me occasionally sharing my personal story with my mental health. I shared my perspective on a recent relapse http://havingcouragetochange.blogspot.com/2011/10/in-search-of-character-led-back-to.html

I now believe, for myself, anyways, that I have a vulnerability to psychosis. If I manage my life in a healthy, balanced way, it usually does not show itself. When I lose sleep, and over-indulge in anxious thinking... my feet will sleep from beneath me.

I follow your story whenever I see a new post. Glad to see meet a person of similar mindset!Smittyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12681768755769989964noreply@blogger.com
